The Canary Islands: A Hidden Gem for Hiking Enthusiasts
The Canary Islands are often known for their beach resorts, but this volcanic archipelago offers much more, especially for hikers! During my two-month island-hopping adventure, I explored many hiking trails and discovered the diverse landscapes the Canaries have to offer. While I didn’t get to visit every island, I highly recommend La Palma and La Gomera for their varied trails and less developed tourist areas. However, the Canaries as a whole have fantastic hikes waiting to be explored.
Taganana to Tamadite, Tenerife
Tenerife is not just about beaches, it also boasts spectacular hikes like the trail from Taganana to Playa de Tamadite. This coastal path in the Anaga Mountains offers stunning views of cliffs, rocks, and the ocean. Starting in Taganana, this four-hour hike is a must-do for any Tenerife visitor.
Roque Nublo, Gran Canaria
Roque Nublo is a prominent landmark on Gran Canaria with a rich history. Tejeda serves as an ideal starting point for a circular hike that includes Roque Nublo. This hike offers breathtaking views and insights into the island’s heritage.
Chinamada, Tenerife
Chinamada is a remote town on Tenerife known for its cave houses and panoramic vistas of the Anaga Mountains. The town is a great starting point for various hikes, including a scenic trail to Punta del Hidalgo on the coast. Catching sunrise or sunset in Chinamada is a magical experience.
Pico de la Nieve, La Palma
La Palma is a hiker’s paradise with top-rated trails like the Pico de la Nieve hike. This linear hike through pine forests to a mountaintop viewpoint offers mesmerizing views above the clouds. Don’t miss the chance to encounter endangered Canarian ravens at the peak.
Garajonay National Park, La Gomera
